NAWBO has 8,000 members in the United States in local 80 chapters, including the Tampa Bay chapter. NAWBO is also affiliated with Les Femmes Chefs d'Entreprises Mondiales (The World Assocation of Women Entrepreneurs), which includes women business owner organizations in 35 countries.
NAWBO offers National Leadership Awards, including the Pioneer Award, which are awarded both nationally and at the local chapter level.
NAWBO explains that The Pioneer Award is conferred upon women business owners who enter uncharted waters, have a pioneering spirit, are innovative, creative and inspiring--people take people where they may not want to go initially, visionaries.
Shirley received this award due to her bold decision to leave classroom teaching after 35 years, take over her late husband's AMSOIL distribution business, and courageously expand that business by 43% the first year alone, working with her new husband, John J. Alquist, in their business, Alquist Enterprises.
A few months ago, Shirley was selected as a Finalist in the St. Petersburg Area Chamber of Commerce 2003 Business of The Year Award in the Rookie of The Year (Entreprenurial Academy graduates) category.
She was recently named a Finalist also by the Greater Brandon Chamber of Commerce in its Business of the Year Award (homebased business category). She will receive this Award on October 16, 2003.
She oversees a multistate network of 220 downline AMSOIL Dealers.
