EXPERT MARKETING MAVEN
John was the marketing mastermind for Wells Fargo Bank's bold move into ATM machines. Strangely enough, California banks were among the last to take ATMs seriously, thinking that ATMs would have little or no benefit but would be a budensome and costly.
The Bank agreed to do proper consumer research and conduct limited test markets. John created a money-making and people-pleasing marketing strategy--market the ATMs as a useful, convenient consumer service, not just newfangled banking machines, as other banks were doing.
The Bank also agreed to our teller reduction plan (one teller per branch), since the ATMs would absorb transactions previously done by tellers.
The Bank's goal was an ROI of 29%, and that was substantially exceeded. The Wells Fargo ATMs quickly became the second in the nation in terms of ATM transaction volume.
What is a maven? The word "maven" is derived from Jewish languages. A maven means an "expert." Marketing professionals are referred to as marketing gurus. And guru means a skilled teacher.
